Tips for Dream Recall

Trouble remembering your dreams?  Try these tips:

.

  • Do your best to maintain a regular sleep schedule.
  • Avoid alcohol, caffeine, and medications or heavy foods that that might affect your ability to sleep deeply.
  • Before going to sleep, focus on your intention to remember your dreams.  Meditating or simply tuning into your breathing can help you to be relaxed and focused.  You may even choose to think about a specific question or area of your life about which you would like to gain insight.
  • When you wake up in the morning, try not to move suddenly or jump too quickly into thoughts of the day ahead.  Stay still for a few moments with your eyes closed and take the time to recall your dreams.  It helps to review the dreams in your mind as if you were preparing to tell a friend about them.  Review each detail and feeling associated with the dreams.
  • It is a good idea to keep a dream journal near your bed so that you can write down your dreams first thing in the morning.  Over time, a journal can be a great way to see your own dream patterns, how your dreams align with different times of your life, and to begin developing your own dream lexicon (a dream dictionary that is unique to you).
  • It is also worthwhile to find friends and family members with whom you can discuss your dreams.  This will help you to remember your dreams more frequently as well as begin to develop your own interpretation skills.
